Why is this film so popular in Japan? Thru finding more info about their newly known blood line grandfather, it provides a legitimate cause for Japanese to revisit their once forbidden fruit -- WW2, and in investigation, they are easy to identify with the so-called high-minded humanity and Love in the process. Moreover, audience are hooked throughout the investigation in the film from finding Miyabe misunderstood as a universally despised coward step by step to be respected by co-fighters and students. Finally the circle goes around as the last pc of puzzle lies in the originally current granddaddy. And as always, the Japanese soldiers and civilians are overwhelmedly portrayed as The Victims. Thru the fabricated hero, Miyabe, the director's main aim is to manage to forward the msg that putting yr life yr wife/ family (and this is so loud and clear pronunciated as the crowd -pleasing heart-warming Love) first okay B4 The Nation/the Empire/the Tenno - that may explain why this film is the most popular film in recent years, the Japanese care their own more than the Nation now. Yet this effort to humanize the hero is faulted eg just after completing the Pearl harbor attack, he was so conscience-minded and high-minded ( -- and strategically brilliantly as always !! ) as to lament the loss of the few Jap pilots killed among overwhelmed celebration while completely ignoring the hundreds and hundreds of Americans just killed in a dishonoured way by their own weapons. More, this so called cowardly ( fictional )pilot even sacrificed his life for sth greater, an inconsistency. After all, the film makers need to please the Japanese public ( and it turned out extremely successful in box office) by portraying the hero finally dying selflessly amongst the controversies about the film as anti-war OR pro-nationalistic/ war/ violence glorification OR some ambiguity including both --- as shared by most Japanese and their society, culture and consciousness. And, it is so strange that the Japanese take 70 extraordinary yrs to overwhelmedly welcome such an ordinary idea of a soldier while serving the country, should also try their best to survive so as to return home to the beloved family. This basic idea is so commonplace in WW2 war literature in W countries since its inception. However, like Japan, in ideology-driven countries like fascist countries, Soviet Union, CCP, the idea was despised as cowardly -- still evident in today's PRC liberation war dramas and their mainstream rhythm.
