Titicut Folliets directed by Frederick Wiseman, documents the inhumane treatment of the inmates by wardens and psychiatrists at a mental hospital inside a Massachusetts prison.
As an audience, while watching this film, I felt myself like a spectator from a distance, who victim those patients struggling in the hopeless situation, but couldn’t help. And the only thing I could do to this fact is to accept it. Any word was not enough to describe the feeling at that time – then I realized it was Despair. In face of this reality, no ones’ subjective anger could make sense. It was the fault of our society. It was our society created such institutions, such cold-blooded wardens and psychiatrists. Thus, It was the tragedy of human being, no one could avoid – this is the feeling Wiseman made this film from.
In order to make every audience feel the same depressed as Wiseman self did, he uses lots of extremely ways to revel the life images. For instance, regardless of people’s shyness and nerves, taking shots of nudities; extremely closing up one’s face, and watching out one’s first reaction, etc. After breaking free of him, Wiseman reinforced every audience to see the process of characters experiencing those awkward human conditions. For instance, back to the very opening, this film begins with 5 patients dancing nervously on the stage without any introductions for this scene. This film camera acts like a sensitive and sharp eye continuously staring at all the dancers, watching out their facial expression changes all along. Moreover, there is no privacy for humans in film. These sequences below left me really deep impressions: every patient being asked to take off their clothes at a public sphere; during the interview, a psychiatrist kept questioning about one patient’s private life, which referred to one’s sexual satisfaction, homosexual tendency… etc. A patient named Jim, after being roughly mustached by two wardens, started his daily dancing practice at corner of room without any cover but wearing two scars mustache left on face.
Images and words being used to compose this film are abstractly inhumane. But I felt Wiseman did it on purpose – after film, every audience would wake up after watching those crucial, cold-blooded film sequences. Then anyone could break free of one and start to think about the cause of problems and to approach the answer gradually. This film was designed to make up by two parts : film composing by Wiseman, and the experience by every audience.
