Emperor Qin learned about it and wrote a letter to Emperor Zhao expressing his willingness to trade fifteen cities for this piece of jade.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Emperor Zhao was very worried when he received the letter and summoned his ministers for a discussion.
Everybody said Emperor Qin only wanted to swindle away the He Clan Jade and they should not fall for his scam.
But in refusing his proposal, they were concerned he might dispatch an army to attack them.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In trying to figure a way out of this dilemma, someone suggested a person by the name of Lin Xiangru was courageous and quick-witted.
Maybe he could find a solution to get out of this predicament.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Emperor Zhao called Lin Xiangru over and asked him what they should do.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lin Xiangru thought for a while and said: “I’m willing to take the He Clan Jade to Qin Empire.
如果秦王真的拿十五座城来换,我就把璧交给他;
If Emperor Qin really would trade away fifteen cities, then I would hand him the jade.
But if he would not give up fifteen cities, then I would come back with the jade.
In that situation the Qin Empire would not have a leg to stand on and would not have an excuse to attack us.”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Emperor Zhao and his ministers could not think of any other way.
So they sent Lin Xiangru to Qin Empire along with the He Clan Jade.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When Lin Xiangru arrived at Qin Empire, he went into the palace to see Emperor Qin and presented the He Clan Jade.
Emperor Qin held the jade in his hands and extolled its beauty as he was looking at it.
However, he did not mention one word about the fifteen cities.
Lin Xiangru sized up the situation and knew Emperor Qin had no intent to exchange the cities for the jade.
So he stepped forward and said: “This jade has a small flaw.
Let me point that out to you.”
Emperor Qin heard that and handed the jade over to Lin Xiangru.
Lin Xiangru, in holding the jade with both hands, backed up a few steps and stood next to a pillar.
He said with an uncompromising tone: “I can see you have no intention to give up the fifteen cities.
Now the jade is in my hands.
If you force me, I’m going to smash both my head and this jade on this pillar.”
As he was speaking, he lifted the He Clan Jade and was going to crash it into the pillar.
Emperor Qin was afraid he would really shatter the jade and said they could talk things out.
So he asked people to take out a map and showed Lin the fifteen cities that he promised to cede over to Zhao Empire.
Lin Xiangru said He Clan Jade was an invaluable gem and he would relinquish it only in a formal ceremony.
So Emperor Qin fixed a date with him to conduct the formalities.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lin Xiangru knew Emperor Qin did not have a shred of sincerity to go through with the exchange of cities for jade.
So when he returned to the inn he asked an assistant to put on disguise and return to Zhao Empire with He Clan Jade through small roads.
On the day of the ceremony, Lin Xiangru went into the palace to see Emperor Qin and said graciously: “He Clan Jade has been returned to Zhao Empire.
If you’re serious with your words, then give us the fifteen cities first and we will deliver the jade over to you.
We will not renege on our promise.
Otherwise it serves no purpose if you kill me because the whole world would then know Qin Empire never comes through with their promises.”
Emperor Qin was at a loss on what he could do and so he had no choice but courteously let Lin Xiangru return to Zhao Empire.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That was the story commonly known as “Return of jade to Zhao Empire in one piece”.
Consequent to accomplishing a laudable task, Emperor Zhao awarded Lin Xiangru the senior official position of “Dafu”.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After a few years, Emperor Qin asked to meet Emperor Zhao at Mianchi.
赵王和大臣们商议说∶“去吧,怕有危险;
In a meeting with his senior officials, Emperor Zhao said: “If I go, I’m afraid there could be danger.
But if I don’t go, I’m demonstrating cowardice on my part.”
Lin Xiangru believed they could not show weakness in dealing with Emperor Qin and it would be best to go.
So Emperor Zhao made up his mind to proceed and took along Lin Xiangru as company.
The great general Lian Po and the army escorted them to the country border in preparation to defend against Qin soldiers.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Emperor Zhao met Emperor Qin At Mianchi, and Emperor Qin wanted Emperor Zhao to play harp for him.
Emperor Zhao thought it would be impertinent to say no and so he played for a little while.
So Emperor Qin instructed his people to put on record that at the Mianchi meeting Emperor Zhao played harp for Emperor Qin.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lin Xiangru was infuriated at the way Emperor Qin insulted Emperor Zhao.
He walked up to Emperor Qin and said: “Would you please play the Fou for Emperor Zhao.”
Emperor Qin refused.
Lin Xiangru asked again and Emperor Qin still declined.
Lin Xiangru said: “Now you are only five steps away from me.
If you refuse again, I’m going after you with everything I’ve got.”
Emperor Qin was coerced into a situation where he had no alternative and so he beat the Fou once.
Lin Xiangru instructed someone to make a record that in the Mianchi meeting Emperor Qin beat Fou for Emperor Zhao.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Emperor Qin did not get an advantage and he knew Lian Po was well-prepared at the border.
So he did not try anything funny on Emperor Zhao and let him return.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Mianchi Lin Xiangru scored more merit points and so Emperor Zhao assigned him the top job of Shangqing, which was higher in rank than Lian Po.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lian Po was displeased and he told other people: “I, Lian Po, have taken down every place I attacked and won every battle I fought.
There are plenty of merits which I’ve earned.
What big deals that Lin Xiangru has done other than talking his way into getting ahead of me?
If I run into him again, I’m going to show him up.”
Words got to the ears of Lin Xiangru.
He took a sick leave to excuse himself from attending the court meeting in order to avoid seeing Lian Po.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One day Lin Xiangru went out in a carriage and saw Lian Po riding on a big horse coming towards his direction.
He asked the driver to turn around and go back.
His assistants were disgruntled and they said: “In seeing Lian Po, Lin Xiangru behaves like a mouse running into a cat.
Why should he be afraid of him?”
Lian Xiangru said to them: “Could all of you think for a moment?
Between General Lian and Emperor Qin, who’s mightier?”
They said: “Of course Emperor Qin is more daunting.”
Lin Xiangru said: “I’m not afraid of Emperor Qin, why then would I be backing away from General Lian?
We all know the reason why Emperor Qin would not invade our Zhao Empire is because in military force we have Lian Po and in administration we have Lin Xiangru.
If we are at odds with each other, then the strength of Zhao Empire would be compromised and Qin Empire would take advantage of the situation to attack us.
I’m avoiding Lian Po for the well-being of Zhao Empire.”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What Lin Xiangru said passed on to the ears of Lian Po.
Lian Po calmly thought about the situation and believed it was really ill-advised for him to disregard the welfare of the country for his own ego.
So he took off his battle armor, carried a chaste tree branch on his back, and went to Lin Xiangru’s house to ask for repentance.
Lin Xiangru saw Lian Po come to ask for forgiveness with the branch on his back and he quickly went out to greet him enthusiastically.
From that day onward, they became good friends and worked in tandem to protect Zhao Empire.
