It’s You

This is a scene that has been played in many stories—two separated couples met after years.
Whether the other one had changed or not, it would always be extremely impressive. In this chapter, the scene was very sarcastic. The sarcasm was revealed by plentiful contrasts.

The contrast between Anson and Peter was obvious. It was one important element to emphasize the contrast between Paula and Anson. As it depicted, “The revolving door functioned, giving up a fine tall man of thirty with a tanned face and a trim mustache. His immaculate fitness made a sharp contrast with Anson’s increasing bulk, which was obvious under the faintly tight cut-away coat.” Peter was quite good-looking. It seemed that Peter had an advantage over Anson at least in this aspect. Does it aim to imply that Paula deserved the better? And it would inevitably evoke an abashed feeling in Anson’s mind.

Also, there was a significant contrast between Paula and Anson. One’s appearance can give away much information, including one’s living habits and mental state. Paula looked younger than seven years ago. With a handsome husband, cute children, it seemed that the past was past, and she had already moved on. Was it true? However, Paula tried to make it convincing, for she repeatedly praised Peter and showed her strong happiness. Her life without him went to a blessed orientation. On the contrary, Anson was so lonely, having so many friends but didn’t have any he could confide in.
What was most irony was that this was partly caused by his own haughtiness. From the beginning to the end, he loved himself most. He possessed so much but so vacant inside. Now he lost the ability to love other woman. Even when encountering a wonderful woman just liked Paula, it’s hard to say that he would fall in love, for so many things had already changed.

It was her, but they didn’t relate anymore.
