In her work, The House on Mango Street, author Sandra Cisneros shares the story o the difficult journey for Esperanza who transition from childhood to adulthood. Using the experience for Esperanza, the author explores the life in an inner city in a poor Latino community. Esperanza is different than other girl or women in her neighborhood because she is an independent and innocence girl.
Esperanza is a special girl who dreams independently. For instance, when her neighbors Marin, need talks about her future, she explains how she hopes “ Can meet someone in the subway who might marry [her] and take [her] to live in a big house far away”(26). Esperanza sees that Marin is a pretty girl who really likes to talk with boys. She has a really beautiful dream that is dependent on boys. However, Esperanza is a really wild girl who wants to create her future by herself. When Esper needs money to go to Catholic high school, she says “ It wasn’t as if I didn’t want to work. I did” (53). Esperanza wants to get a job to earn money that can support her to have a good education. Esperanza doesn’t want to be her grandmother or “ inherit her place by the window”(11). Esperanza wants to use her knowledge to be free not like Rafaela, who is limited in her house or Marin, who depends on boy’s power. Although Esperanza is a powerful independent girl, she is too innocent like a child.
All the girl in the community has old heart than their ages except Esperanza. When Esperanza saw that the boys “ stole” Sally’s key and wanted to get a kiss from Sally, Esperanza feels really bitter and asked help from Tito’s mother. Tito’s mother says “that’s all? what do you want me to do, she said, call the cops? And kept on ironing”(97). Tito’s mother is an adult who has many life experiences, so she knows that just is a joke between girls and boys. Woman’s behavior compares how Esperanza’s innocence. However, Sally and boys feel normal with all their behavior, Esperanza “ felt stupid with [her] brick”(97). Other people’s apathy hurts Esperanza. Esperanza is so innocent, so she faces all things seriously. After Esperanza experiences that, she will hide her innocence just like the “ Monkey, family, table. All gone” (94) and become more powerful.
Esperanza is really different than other people. Independence and innocence are the things that people who live in a community don’t have and never have.
