Blind Spot under the Same Sun

The novel is one of the most fantastic novels I've read so far. It deals with a theme of love, conscious, brotherhood, and redemption. It shows a world used to be happy and friendly like heaven, but now full of violence and poverty like hell, a missing homeland as the result of the sacrifice of political revolutions and foreign invasions. The main characters live in such a world with treacherous fates and ineffable pains.

The novel starts with a carefree childhood of a young Afghanistan boy, Amir. His father is a successful businessman. So he lives under a wealthy condition in a splendid mansion located at the capital of Afghan, Kabul. His father is a real macho. He was willing to help the weak with great generosity. The novel is one of the most fantastic novels I've read so far. It deals with a theme of love, conscious, brotherhood, and redemption.

He also dared to confront malevolent forces gamely. Amir was proud of his father. But he himself was somehow timid, so there's some cleavage between him and his father's relationship.

An important figure in his childhood is his friend Hassan, the child of his servant. They played together every day, climbing on a pomegranate tree and slingshotting neighbors on sunny afternoons. Hassan is brave, loyal. Whenever they were bullied by other boys, Hassan would stand in front of Amir and protect him. Hassan also accepted blames on his behalf for their naughty behaviors.

However, as every one of us has some fatal weaknesses, Amir's coward lives with him under his childhood. It even made a far-reaching consequence that resulted in serious regret inside his mind. Soon following a successful kite tournament won by Amir, Hassan ran after the loser's kite for Amir as usual. But unfortunately, he was caught by Assef, their previous bullier. Cornered by Assef and his companions, Hassan was holding the kite tightly. Then Hassan got raped by these malicious children, under the eyes of Amir. Seeing his close friend under raping for the protection of his kite, Amir dared not dashing out and fight for him. He merely lurked and wandered away. Since then, Hassan had been silent. Amir's regret had tortured him and made him not able to treat Hassan as before. Tragedy began.

After Soviet War exploded, Kabul was under Russian control. They had little freedom. Amir and his father successfully escaped Afghan and arrived at the Bay Area in America. They started their brand new life with other escaping Afghanistan people in the low layer of the society of this new country. Nevertheless, the other Afghanistan people suffered unprecedented tragedies within their country. Soviet armies, rebel forces, and varies communist parties disintegrated the country and continuously waged wars towards each other. Then came the invasion of Taliban. At first, people welcomed it and envisioned that the country would be unified finally and thus obtain peace. To the contrary, the Taliban force treated humans like slaves, with people's condition worse than before. Hassan suffered all these tragedies alone in his own country and died by a bullet from the Taliban, when he was trying his best to protect their mansion.

On the other side, Amir's inner heart never lived in peace. His life went on, together with his guilt. He got married and his father died. Finally, under the request from an old friend of his father, he came back to Afghan. There he got a chance to make a compensation for his fault.

When we were young, usually we are not the ideal self, but with a lot of weakness. We even made serious mistakes which impacted our later life profoundly. So lots of us live under the redemption of our former self. We do good things, help others in pursuit of a quietness of inner mind. It's bitter but worth. That's also part of growing mature.
