Question 1. The American past is often divided into decades -- each one taking on its own label (or labels). The 1860s, for example, is the decade of the Civil War; the 1920s, of prosperity; the 1930s, of hard times; the 1960s, of protest; 1970s, of disillusionment; and so forth. How about the 1990s?
I. The booming of the computer science and technology
In the 1990s, the citizens are connected to each other and even people from other countries by the internet for the first time. I. The booming of the computer science and technology
In the 1990s, the citizens are connected to each other and even people from other countries by the internet for the first time. It all started from the early 1990s that Tim Berners-Lee publishes a formal proposal for the World Wide Web. Then the Internet becomes available for unrestricted commercial use. What followed was a boom of computer science and technology that connected the whole globe together and made the world smaller. Technological developments brought a wide range of sophisticated new electronic products, including the introduction of the Pentium Microprocessor by Intel, the foundation of the online auction website Ebay, the release of the Java Programming Language, the creation of the internet search engine "Ask Jeeves" following Google, the introduction of the iMac computer by the Apple Computers and the creation of the file-sharing service Napster.
Apart from internet access, the biggest assistance for many of the technological advances in the 90's was the improvements in communication including allowing a global sharing of information and Mobile Communications, by the end of the 1990's owning a mobile phone was a fact of life, they are now part of everyday life. People can communicate with each other immediately through emails or mobile phone.

II. Computers and economy
The 1990s also witnessed the companies like Microsoft grow into one of the biggest corporation in the world. The Microsoft managed to provide users with the technology they wanted at an affordable price, and on the other hand still maintained the strong dominance of the market, and contributed to the United States Economy greatly.
Besides, with the fall of the Soviet Union and Eastern European communism in the late 1980s, trade opportunities expanded greatly. The inflation and unemployment rates were also relatively low. Moreover, the Innovations in telecommunications and computer networking dominated a large computer hardware and software industry and revolutionized the ways many industries operate. In fact, computers find themselves almost in every walk of life and profession. The economy grew rapidly, and companies’ profits increase with fast rates. Strong economy also demonstrated in the stock market surging, which made a lot of Americans rich. With the money in hand, more and more Americans can afford more frequent travels to connect and communicate with each other across states and even national boundaries.
The labor type also shifted because of the technology development in computers and software in the 1990s. The machines and tractors decreased the farmers’ number. More intelligent machines also replaced the manufactured positions and a lot of people worked in the service industry, like waiters or office clerks. The entertainment and leisure industries were also booming. And the television shows flourished. I clearly remembered the first time I watch the Simpsons and Family Guy from China, there is also very well-known popularity of the TV show Friends in China till today.
III. Connections by Foreign trade and foreign policy
East and West Germany are reunited after the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s also indicates the victory of the western democracy and capitalism again. In 1992 and 1996 democrat Bill Clinton is elected and reelected as the United States President. In 1993, NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) is signed into law to push for elimination of trade barriers. The connection among United States and its trading partners, Canada and Mexico grew even stronger. Asia and Europe also joined in and built strong ties with United States manufactured goods markets. Needless to say, the mature internet technologies and the worldwide tele communications systems also contributed in enhancing the connection in the business market. In 1995, the World Trade Organization (WTO) was established. The American economy was more closely intertwined with the global economy because of these changes. In 1998, the United States has a budget surplus for the first time in thirty years. Though the labors with lower costs from other countries might have imposed competition with the domestic labor in United States, the high tech industries gave an increasingly strong performance in the global market.
Obviously the 1990s, the decade of connection is not perfect. For example, United States didn’t do anything to intervene the horrific Rwandan genocide , which is a great violation of human rights. But benefited from the foreign trade and the development of the high tech industry, the United States citizens’ lives are more intertwined and connected with each other. And the 1990s economy of the United States was robust and stable. American people communicated with other people more and gained more confidence.
