Will we enjoy higher levels of well-being when we recognize and internalize the fact that happiness is the ultimate currency? Like Aristotle says "happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence".
The author contends that instead of being a slave of the past, i.e. a nihilism, or trying to control future, i.e. a rat racer, or only confining to the moment, i.e. a hedonist, a happy person learns to both look into better future and still be able to enjoy the present. Finding meaning and pleasure in our chores makes us be aware of the happiness around us all the time and the ability always within us of finding happiness. Enjoying joy and pleasure is not a competetive zero-sum game but like a lighted candle that can kindle hundreds and thousand of others.
With the constraints of time and energy, less is more. Time is one of the most important components of a happy life thought it is always limited. We are too busy to squeeze more for more activities and as a consequence we fail to savor, to enjoy. The only way out is to symplify your life instead of putting millions of tasks into your limited time resources. Time poverty is the killer of creativity as well as enjoyment. Quantity affects quality. And stop gulf as you cannot even taste it!
Take easy steps on material income and outcome and you gradually shify the ultimate currency from material to happiness. At the end of the day, that is all that matters.
