a wonderful sequel
Shopaholic Takes Manhattan is the sequel of Sophie Kinsella's Confessions of a Shopaholic. It's a story about the drama happens in Becky and Luke's life when they leave London to New York. Becky is a successful financial expert in Moring Coffee, a television program giving people financial advice. Luke is a successful PR entrepreneur in Brandon Communications. Life is going smoothly for Becky and Luke until Luke decides to go to New York, planning to open up a new office in Manhattan.
When Becky's preparing to start her new role as a TV host in New York, a series of bad things happen to her unexpectedly. Like always, Becky still shops fanatically every time she sees amazing clothes, bags and shoes. But unlike before, Becky is confident about her paying the bill; because she is ascertain that this pending new job will sufficiently pay off all her credit card debt. But she never knows that she'd be taken advantage of because of this weakness of her. Meanwhile, Luke is swamped with work since he is here at Manhattan. Becky's a little pissed about Luke before. Back in London, Luke even brings staff for a business meeting even when he and Becky are having a vacation. Later, Luke is four hours late for Becky's neighbor's wedding, making Becky has to lie about his whereabouts and making people start guessing whether Becky has a rich boyfriend. When Becky finds Luke is over-ambitious about his job, Becky thinks Luke wants to prove something. And it turns out to be true that Luke does wants to prove his success, especially here in America. Luke's birth mother is here in New York and he wants to bond closely with her. But Luke's mother doesn't take it very seriously; she doesn't even bother to reschedule when Luke tells her that he has to attend a meeting the day they are supposed to meet, so poor Becky has to meet Luke's mother by herself eventually. After the horrifying wax thing happened at the salon and nearly being a waitress at the lunch, Becky finds that Luke's mother is unreasonable at all, and worst of all, she doesn't even care for Luke's feelings at all.
When Luke confides to Becky that his new plan is in trouble because some of the American clients hear that Luke's losing client back in London, Becky tells Luke to have a fun night with her just tossing away all the trouble, and they did have a great time. But they never think the very next day, they'd be bombarded a horrible news on the Daily World, a Britain Newspaper. Picture of Becky holding many bags of stuff is on the newspaper, followed by malicious comments about Becky being a completely helpless and reckless shopaholic. Becky feels so humiliated and hurt when she finds out the news, and felt more vulnerable when Luke blames her that his business may also be in jeopardy because of her. And this is only the just beginning, American Television show also calls off Becky's financial TV slot for fear of negative publicity. So Becky returns London, appalled to find her news are spread to her family, friends and Morning show once she used to work for. Becky really hits the bottom and with no job, no boyfriend, but appalling debts, Becky knows she can't be more unfortunate. Luckily, she has Suze, her best friend slash flat-mate, who is always there for Becky, no matter what.
All this can't be worse until a silver lining appears for Becky. Becky accidentally finds out that Alicia, Luke's colleagues in London, are stealing Luke's client, Bank of London, she doesn't hesitate to tell Miachel, an American friend of Luke.
Day by day, Becky starts to rethink about her life. She auctions all the stuff she bought before, including the D&G scarf with the memory she had with Luke she treasure most, and finally pays off all her debts. And she also gently refuses the job Miachel gave her as an advertising PR in Washington but applies a job as a senior shopper of Barney in New York. On the day she is leaving for New York, Luke appears. He admits the mistakes he has made and tells Becky that it's him Alicia is after, and Becky is just an easy target in this business conspiracy and worst of all a poor victom. However, Becky still decides to go, because she thinks that only she let go of the past, she can let the new life in.
Months later, Becky finds herself in her new life in New York and thinks this is the right patch for her. But to her surprise, Luke again appears in front her, telling her that he has opened up a new office here in New York. He says he wants Becky as his only helper, not only for choosing clothes for him but also for his life here in New York. With a very touching and heartfelt chat between Luke and Becky, you can easily predict the end. And this is the end I think most of the readers like to see.
The first half of this book is mediocre, the middle is OK, but the ending really strikes me. So I will rank this book a four out of five, thumps up!
