Love Conquered Conceit

In the novel Jane Austin liked to use the word “conceit”. Actually all the characters in this book were conceited to some degree. Women believed themselves or their own daughters will find better husbands than the others. Men considered themselves most charming and attractive. Everyone in the story was lost into a ridiculous vanity.
The hero and heroine are no reception. Darcy, a conceited man, always wore a proud face and an acid tongue. Beautiful Elizabeth was just “tolerable” in his eyes. He even urged his friend Bingley not to marry lovely Jane Bennet, for he despised the Bennet family, or Mrs. Bennet and her young daughters. Although part of Darcy’s conceit was from prejudice, he was really annoying at the beginning of the story. Not everybody could be lucky like him, who borned into a life of privilege and wealth. The Bennets might be ignorant and not decent, but considering their poor economic condition it was quite normal for them to be too anxious about money and possession.
Elizabeth, a conceited woman, held herself like a princess though in a common estate. She refused to be realistic like her mom and firmly rejected the proposal of nasty Mr. Collins, although it might a best choice for an elder unmarried girl. To Mr. Darcy she always treated him with criticism and irony, just because at the first meeting Darcy “hurts my conceit”.
It was love that changed both of them, and pushed them to understand each other. They could finally cast their vanity and hesitant away, being honest and fearless to their lover.
Darcy gradually fell in love with Elizabeth for her charming personality, but he never showed his affection until the mid of the story. What a pity! Otherwise Elizabeth would not be cheated by Wickham nor be bothered by Collins, and would not misunderstand her Mr. right Darcy. However, those annoying things took place and prejudice to Darcy rooted in Elizabeth’s heart. When Darcy conquered his hesitant and admitted his love for Elizabeth, proposing to her, Elizabeth could not accept what had happened. She impolitely criticized him and quarreled with him. Darcy was hurt but, in the other hand, began to examine himself and decided to make some change. The next time they met was in Pemberley, a new Mr. Darcy showed up in front of Elizabeth. He became very polite and gracious to her aunt and uncle. What was more, when hearing Lydia’s problem he didn’t say something acid but instantly gave his help hand. (Elizabeth didn’t know then) At last, when hearing Elizabeth defied Lady de Bourgh’s command, he came to her to show his love, regardless of the probably humiliating result. Love made him a new man, he was no longer conceited and changed his attitude toward other people. As for Elizabeth, she gradually acquainted Darcy but feared of being humiliated by people in Darcy’s class. She cherished her dignity so much that she became very shy and shaken when faced with her love. But when every mystery was unveiled, she knew what Darcy had done for her. She was touched and regretted, willing to make every effort to draw Darcy back. When Lady de Bourgh obliged her to give up Darcy, she showed her affection openly to this strict woman despite the insult following her words. She used to be proud, but she didn’t want to lose her lover once more, that made her take a brave step which settled her good ending.
I got such words from the Holy Bible:” Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is
not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” In love we should not only concentrate on ourselves, we had to learn how to please your partner. Love drove us conquer the shortcomings of our disposition, letting us be more pleasant. The loving story of Darcy and Elizabeth was really a classic, not only for its excellent plot and wise words, but also for the true meaning of love it showed us.
