This paragraph tends to give an authorial conjecture to "the way in which P's party was built up". "This view of them", namely, not "their intentions" as understood by the translator but "this conjecture of how P's party was built up", finds its supportive arguments (×) not in (1) the names of the parties (i.e., Party of the Plain and of the Coast, and certainly not "notables of both parties"), which has been dealt with in the beginning of the chapter, (√) but in (2) the following elements: <a> Alcmaeonidae's character (disposition, ethos, not "notable persons"), <b> actions of Megacles, <c> the possible fact that Lycurgus belongs to the older nobility.
