The magnetic resonance imaging data show that the development toward full language performance is dependent on maturational changes in the gray and white matter. While the gray matter in the language-relevant regions decreases with age, the white matter connectivity between these regions increases with age. The findings provide suggestive evidence that the full language capacity can only be reached once the brain has fully matured.
