In a second study, two groups of hearing babies were compared: babies from one group were born to deaf parents, and babies from the other group were born to hearing parents. Recording and analyzing these babies’ hand movements between 6 and 12 months of age revealed that only infants born to deaf parents showed linguistic hand movements (Petitto et al., 2000). These findings indicate that language develops in a biologically based universal manner. Crucially, the data indicate that language and language development are definitely not dependent on speech(parole).
