A clear functional differentiation into different subregions within the superior temporal gyrus/superior temporal sulcus of the left hemisphere into three parts—a posterior, a middle, and an anterior part—has been demonstrated by Giraud and Price (2012). The middle portion of the superior temporal sulcus/superior temporal gyrus was found to respond to general sounds as well as speech sounds, whereas the anterior and posterior portions of the superior temporal gyrus respond to speech only (see figure 1.2).
