Empire of Cotton 8.4
Introduction
Most importantly, cotton goods-partly because they were so labor-intensive to produce--became an important store of calue and a medium of exchange. Rulers everywhere demanded cotton cloth as tribute or taxes, and indeed it might be said that cotton was present at the birth of political economy of such. Among the Aztects, for example, it was the most important medium for tribute payments. In China, genining in the fifiteenth century, households were required to pay some of their taxex in cotton cloth....Practical as means to pay taxes, cotton cloth was also used as currency in China, throughout Africa, in Southeast Asia, and in Mesoamerica."
