Striking, uprightly held inflorescences are quite unusual among trees, but immediately call to mind many spe- cies in the Southern Hemisphere family Proteaceae, a group that also contains many plants with hollylike leaves. The plants described in this passage may have been a spe- cies of Banksia, especially one of the arborescent species such as B. integrifolia, which grows today in coastal forests of eastern Australia.
