Translation, Counter-Culture, and The Fifties in the USA
Toury and even-zohar would no doubt argue that all African nations are 'weak' and therefore not relevant as a challenge to previous analyses of the role of translations in nations with strong literary systems. Althougl the classification is loaded with socio-political implications, for the purposeof this discussion, let us accept the ps-terms and focus on a 'strong' nation: post-world War II USA. In the 1950s, the US was one of two worldthat spanned the spectrum of traditional, popular, political, and highly experamental forms of writing. The period is generally perceived aspolitically stable and socially conservative; Dwight D. Eisenhower was president, Richard Nixon vice-president. Compared to earlier decades, the general population enjoyed economic prosperity and a high employment rate. Macdonalds mass produced hamburgers, General Motors mass produced autos and developers like those at Levittown mass produced homes. Industrial success stories fuelled a higher standard of living and the perception of general prosperity. The corpus I chose to examine includes poetry translations in the USA during the fifties and early sixties, concentrating on Bly's translations from Spanish. My initial data seem to show that translation, rather than being a conservative force, rather than conforming to already existing models and normative behaviour, actually preceded and spear-headed the search by the new generation, a decade later, for alternative models of expression
