Islam in the Modern World

Mernissi argues that, in general, classical Muslim scholarship functioned as a tool of the social and political elite, indulging “the desire of male politicians to manipulate the sacred” (Mernissi 1987: 43). In order to prove this, she examines early Muslims who transmitted Hadiths from the Prophet that Mernissi considers misogynist and unbefitting Muhammad. One of the Prophet’s followers narrated a Hadith, considered authentic by Sunni scholars, in which the Prophet says “A community that entrusts its affairs to a woman will not flourish.”Effectively engaging in historical psychoanalysis, Mernissi uses the work of classical Muslim scholars to argue such Hadiths were forged by misguided early Muslims who indulged misogynist beliefs.
