God is invisible while we live. \Ve may see him when we die. This is the sense of San Juan's beautiful. extreme, impatient poem (perhaps one of the two most beautiful poems in Spanish), "I die because I do not die."

The genius of San J uan was that by utterly denying attention to any worldly. sensory matter, he admitted that he was left with only two ways of reaching God . One was death, the other poetry. \Vhile asking questions about the impossibility of joining God, even through poetic means, the poet joins God th rough poetf}'· As he searches in doubt, he achieves what he desires: union with God.
