For Duncan and Wallach, “the sudden flowering of art museums all over Europe in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries testifies to the bourgeoisie’s growing social and capital power.” The museum, in this view, serves to “institutionalize the bourgeois claim to speak for the interest of all mankind,” and in doing so helps the bourgeoisie both to “secure power” over the state and to represent that domination.

Arno Mayer has argued that “the museum’s principal function was to further the integration of the aspirant bourgeois into these the old ruling classes on terms favors to the old elites.”
