when I spoke to the coaches of various Putnam exam teams, they all said the same thing: “I love Polya, but my students don’t get any better at problem solving by reading his books.” I looked at the math ed literature, and the findings were similar: “I tried to teach `a la Polya. My students and I had a great time, but when we finished I couldn’t produce any evidence that they were better at problem solving than they were before.”
So I was confronted by a nice challenge. If P´olya was right, then we should be able to teach students to be much better problem solvers. But the evidence said something was missing. What was it?
