The pure, unthinkable force of energy was conceived by Freud by appeal to a mythic substance called libido. It is this unknown and ultimately unknowable source of energy, a perpetual excess that animates the human subject even as it threatens to blast it apart, that Lacan calls «real." And here Lacan adds something crucial by linking the unrepresentable excess of libido to the Other. The real is the dimension of das Ding, of what is in the other more than the other.
