Not only is all representation rooted in a ground of the unrepresented, the processes of representation are divided between two grounds, each governed by different laws. Psychoanalysis reveals representation to be submitted to a double ground, defined by Freud in terms of thing-presentations and word-presentations and rearticulated by Lacan as the split between imaginary and symbolic.

///////////From a Lacanian point ofview, therefore, psychoanalysis can be seen to form an intersection between two great currents of contemporary theory phenomenology and structuralism, each devoted to a different facet ofthe problem ofrepresentation. The subject of the unconscious, describable by neither tradition alone, is conceivable only at the junction between phenomenal presentation and structural articulation.
