The mausoleum was to rise exactly on the old central axis radiating out from the Forbidden City, an axis that in olden days had carried the eye southward through gate after gate, as in imagination the central force of imperial China spread through the city and beyond the outer wall to the people of the country as a whole. Now the shrine for Mao's embalmed corpse would form a permanent barrier to that vision.
