-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= For Poesy! —No, —she has not a joy— 35 At least for me—so sweet as drowsy noons, And evenings steeped in honeyed indolence. Oh, for an age so sheltered from annoy That I may never know how change the moons, Or hear the voice of busy common-sense! Fade softly from my eyes, and be once more 55 In masque-like figures on the dreamy urn; Farewell! I yet have visions for the night, And for the day faint visions there is store. Vanish, ye Phantoms! from my idle sprite Into the clouds, and never more return! O brightest! Though too late for antique vows, Too, too late for the fond believing lyre, When holy were the haunted forest boughs, Holy the air, the water and the fire; Yet even in these days so far retired 40 From happy pieties, thy lucent fans, Fluttering among the faint Olympians, I see, and sing, by my own eyes inspired. So let me be thy choir and make a moan Oh, for a beaker full of the warm South, 15 Full of the true, the blushful Hippocrene, With beaded bubbles winking at the brim, And purple-stained mouth, That I might drink, and leave the world unseen, And with thee fade away into the forest dim: Away! away! For I will fly to thee, Not charioted by Bacchus and his pards, But on the viewless wings of Poesy, Though the dull brain perplexes and retards: Already with thee! Tender is the night, 35 And haply the Queen-Moon is on her throne, Clustered around by all her starry fays; But here there is no light, Save what from heaven is with the breezes blown Through verdurous glooms and winding mossy ways. Now more than ever seems it rich to die, 55 To cease upon the midnight with no pain, While thou art pouring forth thy soul abroad In such an ecstasy! Still wouldst thou sing, and I have ears in vain— To thy high requiem become a sod. Adieu! The fancy cannot cheat so well As she is famed to do, deceiving elf. Adieu! adieu! Thy plaintive anthem fades 75 Past the near meadows, over the still stream, Up the hill-side; and now 'tis buried deep In the next valley-glades: Was it a vision, or a waking dream? Fled is that music: —Do I wake or sleep? Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard Are sweeter; therefore, ye soft pipes, play on; Not to the sensual ear, but, more endeared, Pipe to the spirit ditties of no tone. Fair youth, beneath the trees, thou canst not leave 15 Thy song, nor ever can those trees be bare; Bold lover, never, never canst thou kiss, Though winning near the goal—yet do not grieve: She cannot fade, though thou hast not thy bliss, For ever wilt thou love, and she be fair! Ah, happy, happy boughs! That cannot shed Your leaves, nor ever bid the spring adieu; And, happy melodist, unwearied, For ever piping songs for ever new! More happy love, more happy, happy love! 25 For ever warm and still to be enjoyed, For ever panting, and for ever young— All breathing human passion far above, That leaves a heart high-sorrowful and cloyed, A burning forehead, and a parching tongue. 'Beauty is truth, truth beauty'—that is all Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know. Nor let the beetle, nor the death-moth be Your mournful Psyche, nor the downy owl A partner in your sorrow's mysteries; For shade to shade will come too drowsily, And drown the wakeful anguish of the soul. Or if thy mistress some rich anger shows, Imprison her soft hand, and let her rave, And feed deep, deep upon her peerless eyes. Give thy kings law—leave not uncurbed the great; So with the honours past thou'lt win thy happier fate. Of highest heaven; to the rolling spheres 10 Thou sweetly singest; naught thy hymning mars, Above the ingrate world and human fears. On earth the good man base detraction bars From thy fair name and waters it with tears. O'ershading sorrow doth not make thee less Delightful; thou thy griefs dost dress With a bright halo, shining beamily; As when a cloud a golden moon doth veil, Its sides are tinged with a resplendent glow, 10 Through the dark robe oft amber rays prevail, And like fair veins in sable marble flow; Still warble, dying swan, still tell the tale, The enchanting tale, the tale of pleasing woe. To regions of his own his genius true Took happy flights. Who shall his fame impair When thou art dead and all thy wretched crew? How many bards gild the lapses of time! A few of them have ever been the food Of my delighted fancy—I could brood Over their beauties, earthly, or sublime; And often, when I sit me down to rhyme, 5 These will in throngs before my mind intrude: But no confusion, no disturbance rude Do they occasion; 'tis a pleasing chime. Still time is fleeting, and no dream arises Gorgeous as I would have it; us as I would have it But what, without the social thought of thee, Would be the wonders of the sky and sea? Many such eves of gently whispering noise May we together pass, and calmly try What are this world's true joys, ere the great voice From its fair face shall bid our spirits fly. What when a stout unbending champion awes Envy and Malice to their native sty? Unnumbered souls breathe out a still applause, Proud to behold him in his country's eye. But thou to please wert nurtured so completely That I can never tell what mood is best. I shall as soon pronounce which Grace more neatly Trips it before Apollo than the rest. Till their stern forms before my mind arise— Perhaps on the wing of poesy upsoar, Full often dropping a delicious tear When some melodious sorrow spells mine eyes. My spirit is too weak—mortality Weighs heavily on me like unwilling sleep, And each imagined pinnacle and steep Of godlike hardship tells me I must die Like a sick eagle looking at the sky. That in a time, when under pleasant trees Pan is no longer sought, I feel a free, A leafy luxury, seeing I could please With these poor offerings a man like thee. Oh, horrid dream! See how his body dips Dead-heavy; arms and shoulders gleam awhile; He's gone; up bubbles all his amorous breath! When through the old oak forest I am gone, Let me not wander in a barren dream, But, when I am consumed in the fire, Give me new Phoenix wings to fly at my desire. [ And when I feel, fair creature of an hour, That I shall never look upon thee more, 10 Never have relish in the fairy power Of unreflecting love; then on the shore Of the wide world I stand alone and think Till love and fame to nothingness do sink. Be with me in the summer days and I Will for thine honour and his pleasure try. [ Turn the key deftly in the oiled wards, And seal the hushed casket of my soul. Or living on perhaps, your wretched thrall, Forget, in the mist of idle misery, Life's purposes—the palate of my mind Losing its gust, and my ambition blind! Look up, look up—I flutter now On this flush pomegranate bough. See me! 'tis this silvery bill Ever cures the good man's ill. Shed no tear! Oh, shed no tear! 15 The flower will bloom another year. Adieu, adieu—I fly, adieu! I vanish in the heaven's blue— Adieu, adieu! The sun, with his great eye, Sees not so much as I; And the moon, all silver-proud, Might as well be in a cloud. Ye have left your souls on earth! Ye have souls in heaven too, Double-lived in regions new! Let the winged Fancy roam, Pleasure never is at home.
