“如果人们能从一个新的角度来理解,那么他也能够用一种新的方式来表达;反之亦然。”就是这句话让我这个对建筑史颇为生疏的人坚持把这本书读完的。这是一种非常开明的态度,帮你重新审视建筑历史上记载的东西,摘去建筑上附加的“主义”头衔,竟然发现某一“古典”建筑具有跟现代建筑类似的特质。书中频繁举例和类比,可以看到作者敏锐的观察力。

“语言决定了如何表达思想”,所以作者总结和诠释了现代建筑的七个基本原则,又顺藤摸瓜找出它们的历史依据,甚至追溯到了史前时期,梳理建筑流派的演变 find elements throughout history, and discuss the process of architectural innovation 。但作者贯穿始终的偏激语言风格,对古典主义的全否,对某些事物的极力推崇,把赖特看做建筑史上神一般的人物,很多时候觉得莫名奇妙。
